The peace treaty of 1783 gave the new nation the land east of the Mississippi River (except Canada and Florida). Led by General George Washington, it won the Revolutionary War with large support from France. In 1776 in Philadelphia, the Second Continental Congressdeclared the independence of the colonies as the United States of America. Tax resistance, especially the Boston Tea Party (1773), led to punitive laws by Parliament designed to end self-government in Massachusetts.Īrmed conflict began in 1775.
